IIMSAM Goodwill Ambassador H.E. Dr. Ayman Al-Baya and Chairman of Aswasl International Group Advocates & Legal Consultants Donate “Lifesaving” Blood to Assist Patients Suffering from Thalassemia at the Latifa Hospital Thalassemia Centre’s Inauguration in Dubai

The law firm Al Wasl International Group Advocates and L egal Consultants Staff also participated the event that took place on the 20th of December 2015 as part of the community partnership programmes to support Thalassemia, which is an integral part of The Health Authority strategy in Dubai.
According to the Thalassemia Center in Dubai the number of new cases detected for thalassemia patients in Dubai continues to drop, and the Center offers its services to 850 patients, more than 50% of them are citizens, and 450 of them were receiving blood continuously every three weeks, and visits to the Center 17 times a year. The Center has more than 90 patients which have recovered completely, after a bone marrow transplant, and they are now engaged in their normal lives. The age ranges between and one and half years to 20 years of age.

Dr. Khawla Belhoul stressed…”the importance of this donation which will contribute effectively to improve the lives of patients and help them. Noting that patients with Thalassemia needs to transfer 3 to 4 units of blood monthly for life. To maintain a good level of hemoglobin, which increases the iron content in the blood, which leads to excess iron deposition in the member function of the body, such as the heart and cause a decline in heart function or even death as it deposits in the glands such as the pancreas. Thus, the patient suffers high sugar, and delays in puberty and growth failure in liver function.”

WHAT IS THALASSEMIA? A BRIEF DEFINITION:
Thalassemia is a blood disorder passed down through families (inherited) in which the body makes an abnormal form of hemoglobin, the protein in red blood cells that carries oxygen. The disorder results in excessive destruction of red blood cells, which leads to acute-anemia. Thalassemia: Any of a group of hereditary hemolytic diseases caused by faulty hemoglobin synthesis, widespread in Mediterranean, African, and Asian countries.
