Special Representative of the Secretary-General of IIMSAM to the Federal Republic of Nigeria
Let me begin by paying tribute to the important role I have been assigned and how personally committed I will be in the task ahead as the Ambassador Special Representative of the Secretary-General Maradona to the Federal Republic of Nigeria as such I will work with the same passion as our Secretary-General who has performed a miracle of what he has been able to accomplished in a short time period despite severe under funding and challenges of the organisation that has stifled at times the institutional development of IIMSAM.
The Secretary-General and I can mutually reinforce each other. We must work together to place the use of spirulina at the centre of the international food security agenda. This is especially true as we move towards the extremely important dead line of the Millennium Development Goals and the 2015 Post Development Agenda.
My role offers a valuable opportunity towards the institutional development of IIMSAM in Nigeria over the coming years based on this fundamental purpose; we need to continue our work of developing with strategic partners like Hashbiotech (India) with on the ground Strategic Partners from Nigeria with a range of comprehensive initiatives oriented responses to the demand for spirulina and develop a comprehensive pilot-project in Nigeria against severe malnutrition and related illneses that has led to the following atrophies within the Population as Nigeria’s Under-5 mortality rate (U5MR),
2012 Ranks:124, Stunting (%) 2008-2012, moderate & severe due to malnutrition 35.8 Life expectancy, 2012 52.1 according to UNICEF.
As Secretary-General Maradona points out we must create real development with concrete deeds such as distribution opportunities for spirulina in Nigeria as we have done in Kenya where thousands of Spirulina dosages have been distributed to the malnourished and others at the IIMSAM Spirulina Distribution Centre in Kisumu, Kenya since 2009.
These include the creation and strengthening of the sustainable alternatives livelihoods, and access to educating the masses about the potentialities of spirulina. This will help the exposed malnourished groups scape from the scourges of acute malnutrition.
In our search for a balanced approach, we must acknowledge the important role of IIMSAM under the leadership of SG Maradona in the advocacy within the United Nations and outside the UN. In particular getting a selected group of Member States to draft a spirulina resolution that led to the UN-FAO Report of 2008 on the potentialities of spirulina.
IIMSAM’s international accomplishments along with its strategic partners over the past few years has set the footprint to continue to evolve in the distribution of spirulina in saving as many lives as we can from the menace of acute malnutrition and related illnesses.
I look forward to our continued partnership in working together with the Secretary General Maradona during my tenure in the Federal Republic of Nigeria as we prepare to make IIMSAM reach its full potential for the betterment of mankind and a better world where people can live a life of dignity and free from stunting due to malnutrition.
